DETAILS :
DECAR
METHYL is a colourless, slightly hygroscopic, high
boiling liquid with a mild odour. It is completely
miscible with water and most organic solvents. In
addition, it has good solvent power for nitrocellulose
and can be diluted to a considerable extent with organic
solvents. It forms binary azeotropic mixtures with
some organic substances.

TEST METHOD
ASTM
standards are published by the American Society for
Testing and Materials, 1916 Race Street, Philadelphia

SOLVENT
POWER
DECAR
METHYL readily dissolves nitrocellulose, celluloid,
Colophony and its ester resins, Manila copal; phenol
formaldehyde urea formaldehyde, melamine formaldehyde
and other condensation resins, alkyd and other ethanol
– soluble maleic resins, and also in Uresin
B (carbamaate resins). Polyvinyl butyrals, Polyvinyl
Acetate, Epoxy resins and polyvinyl ether, the commonly
used plasticizers, chlorinated diphenylls, certain
vegetable oils (castor oil and inseed oil), essential
oils and turpentine. Shellac, ethyl cellulose, benzyl
cellulose, cellulose acetate, chlorinated rubber,
polyacrylates and polymethacrylates, coumarone resins,
certain special plasticizers and some polyvinyl chloride
resins are all only soluble in DECAR METHYL with some
difficulty.
Natural
resins, coal tar, cellulose acetobutyrate, polyvinyl
formal and certain polymers such as polyvinyl chloride
swell in DECAR METHYL or are only partially soluble.
Dammar,
natural rubber, polychlorobutadiene, bitumen, polyisobutylene,
polystyrene, polyvinyl carbazole, polyvinyl alcohol’s
most natural and synthetic waxes, ozokerite, paraffin
wax, mineral oils, linseed oil and wood oil are practically
insoluble in DECAR METHYL.
APPLICATIONS
DECAR
METHYL is a relatively non-volatile solvent and is
therefore only included in special lacquer formulations,
principally nitrocellulose lacquers, to improve the
properties of the lacquers. It can be stabilized with
2, 6 ditert – butyl – 4 – methylphenol
(0.005%). Owing to its low volatility, only small
quantities can be added to lacquer solutions. The
dilution capacity of DECAR METHYL is very good.
DECAR
METHYL does not attack rubber. DECAR METHYL is also
used in the printing ink industry and in the production
of ball point pen inks.
DECAR
METHYL is used as Anti Icing Chemical (i.e. as aviation
fuel additive).
